PRA Newsletter 21 August 2020 - Spring Update

PRA

Hello there Parkview and Greenside East Residents and Friends

It’s nearing the end of August and hopefully we have seen our last cold front! That horrible icy cold weather is turning and a warm and fragrant promise of Spring is starting to fill the air, with our beautiful avenues of trees sprouting new green leaves.

We have a lot of news that we are just bursting to share with you all.

WHAT'S NEW IN PARKVIEW

We have had a number of very exciting developments in Tyrone Ave. This Spring promises to bring with it a wonderful array of new spaces and places for our community to enjoy.

Our new Tyrone Spar
Work has commenced on our new Tyrone Spar!  For those of you who missed the WhatsApp and Facebook posts, it is official, Dino, Manny, and family, who have run Tyrone Fruiters for over 57 years, have bought the Parkview Spar and the building it is located in.

The Spar will be getting a total revamp and will now be called Tyrone Spar. The 1st phase of the revamp is going well, and aims to be complete on the 1st of September.  The Tyrone Spar will have a new store layout and will be jam packed with new stock, guaranteed!

Update on the Foyer Coffee Shop
Trudi and Guy Mitchell, after 23 years of ownership, have sold the Foyer Coffee shop to one of our local families, Chris and Samantha Kretschmer.  The Kretschmer’s took ownership at the end of July and in Samantha’s words are ‘very busy feathering the nest’ at the moment.  They are working hard at cleaning, painting and tiling, and are also hoping to open on the 1st of September.  The Foyer Menu is also under construction and in a couple of weeks they hope to set up a casual self-service coffee station and encourage the Parkview community to pop in for a chat, as they are keen to hear your suggestions.

Welcome to The Makery
The Makery opened their studio in The Village Shopping Centre. Two of our local residents, Heidi Gresty and Jacquie Myburgh Chemaly, have sourced and created a range of jewellery, clothing and accessories they hope other women will love as much as they do.  Visit their lovely new shop and take a look at what they have on offer.

Village Shopping Centre Update
In the 2nd week of September, the Village Shopping Centre’s new exciting store, featuring Trend{ING} and Star Showroom, will be opening.  As a part of this celebration, the centre will be hosting a Spring Celebration and all the shops will be running Spring Specials. Watch this space.  We will keep you posted!

New Addition to The Perfect Cup Family
Congratulations to Thomas and Michelle Dancer on the birth of their beautiful baby boy on the 20th of August. We wish them great blessing as they embark on this new journey as a family.

FOOD DRIVE UPDATE

The Parkview Residents and friends have to date made more than 462 individual donations towards the Food Drive, Gift of the Givers and supporting our local car guards.

The Food Drive alone has received
334 donations.  This is a massive accomplishment from one suburb. Thank you so much Parkview Residents.  Even though we are not able to do as much as we were doing before, our food parcel drive is going to continue for as long as we have enough funds coming in to keep it going.  Please continue to support this very worthy cause.  The details are in the attached poster.

FEEDING THE DUCKS AT ZOO LAKE

Did you know that feeding the ducks bread is not healthy for them.  Bread makes the ducks ill as it does not contain the right nutrition or calories that they need.  Rotting bread polutes the water and causes surface algae that kills the fish, makes the ducks sick and the water smelly.

If you would like to feed the ducks a good nutritious meal you can give them seedless grapes cut in half, bird seed, shredded lettuce or cooked rice.

MORE GREEN SPACES TO EXPLORE

In line with the President’s easing of restrictions on exercising in green spaces, please find all you need to know about access to the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens and Melville Koppies.

PRA HERITAGE AND TOWN PLANNING

The Town Planning and Heritage webpages on the Parkview Residents’ Association website have recently been updated. To access them now you can click on the links below.

If you are considering
embarking on any alterations and/or changing the zoning of your property, kindly consult these webpages first.  The Heritage page describes the process to follow if your house isolder than 60 years and the Town Planning page sets out the Town Planning policy landscape.  There is also a link to a recently updated ‘Building Guidelines’ document.

After reading these documents, if any resident would like any further advice or guidance on how to proceed, please feel free to contact the Heritage and Town Planning team via info@parkview.org.za

HALLOWEEN

After a lot of deliberating, the PRA have decided
NOT to go ahead with a Halloween function in the George Hay Park this year.  The COVID pandemic means we cannot predict, with any certainty, the safety of such an event. It takes time to get sponsors on board and book the setup, so leaving it to the last minute is not an option.

We are, however,
proposing that our residents consider planning their own street or block ‘trick or treat’ event.  Chat to your neighbours to see who would be willing to come on board and go ahead with a small street party instead.  This way children can still dress-up. As a street you can more effectively implement the necessary protocols around social distancing, than we would be able to do as a suburb trying to manage a large crowd.  We encourage you to forward pics of your ‘trick or treating’ events to share on our Facebook pages and WhatsApp groups. We can’t wait to see what you all come up with. Please remember that masks are key and all sweets that are distributed must be cleaned and handled with gloves.

REPEAT: PRA FEES

Thank you to the many residents who responded to the WhatsApp reminder about our annual PRA fees. In response to a number of questions, the fees are R500 and should be paid into the PRA account below.  The PRA fees go towards the upkeep of the park and towards any functions arranged by the PRA.  When necessary, we also cover costs like the painting of the street names, the clearing of the storm water drains etc.

LICENCE EXPIRY DATE EXTENDED

Because of the heavy initial lockdown restrictions and the subsequent frequent COVID related closures of licensing offices,  there is now a huge backlog of licence renewals. To address this:
All
motor vehicle licence discs, temporary permits, roadworthy certificates that expired between March 26 and May 31 will now expire on November 30 2020.

All learner’s licences, driving licence cards, temporary driving licences, professional and driving permits that expire between March 26 and August 30, will now expire on 31 January 2021.
Insurers have confirmed that if you are in a car accident or your car is stolen and your licence has expired, you will still be covered.  Special thanks to Emmarentia Residents Association for sharing this info.

PRA COLLECTIONS

We currently have one PRA collection happening for MES.  Since it's women’s day month they are hosting a special tea and crafts morning for all the ladies in the shelters.  Please will you contribute towards this collection.  It closes on the 22nd of August.  Please see the attached images for more information.

COJ Development Planning Department goes electronic

You can now deal with this Department via e-mail instead of going into the office. Please click on this link to see the attached list for the email addresses.

IN CLOSING

We celebrated Women’s Day this month, so it seems fitting to end with some wise words by one of our South African Hero’s, Advocate Thuli Madonsela.

“Thank you for your GRACE, COURAGE & HOPE.

Hope is the little spark that gives you faith  in the possibility of a future that seems unattainable.

This morning I’m reminded that its grace that took me to every place I’ve been, led me through challenges and grace that’s brought me here.

One of the greatest gifts you can give a person in need of hope is a smile.

We are incredibly proud of our very
kind community that have so graciously and generously given of their finances and their time during this challenging period.  Through our action as a community, we have given so many destitute people hope and helped to meet their needs.

Thank you Parkview.  You are amazing.
